Every year on October 23rd is a national holiday in Thailand. Thai people commemorate the King Chulalongkorn (Rama V).
Chulalongkorn (Seprember 20, 1853 - October 23, 1910) was the king of Siam (Thailand) from 1868 to 1910. He is considered one of the greatest king. He introduced many reforms and abolished slavery. His reign was characterized by the modernization of Siam. As Siam was threatened by Western expansionism, Chulalongkorn save Siam from being colonized. After this, he earned the epithet “Phra Piya Maharat” (The Great Beloved King).
